Meet Shady Cakes: Spring Is Blooming in the Floral Realm
Spring flowers are popping.
Tulips. Daisies. Daffodils.
And apparently, Shady Cakes.
This new Floral Realm cultivar is an in-house Garden Remedies cross of Blueberry Cupcake x Shady Grape 8, and from the moment we cracked open the jar, it felt like a fitting way to welcome the season.
The batch we unboxed came in at 28.94% THC with 2.69% total terpenes, but Shady Cakes really got our attention with its delicate floral character and balanced first impression.
Spring has officially arrived in the Realm.
Blueberry Cupcake x Shady Grape 8
Shady Cakes brings together Blueberry Cupcake and Shady Grape 8, combining two familiar genetics into something entirely new.
If Shady Grape 8 sounds familiar, there's a reason.
It's also one half of Maye-Day, our Grape Crostata x Shady Grape 8 cross. But where Maye-Day brings delicate lemongrass and hazy aromatics to the Floral Realm, Shady Cakes takes the same Shady Grape 8 parent in a different direction.
That's one of the things we love about exploring new genetics. Change one side of the family tree, hunt through the resulting plants, and you can discover an entirely different expression.
With Shady Cakes, that expression is all about spring.
Tulips, Daisies and Daffodils
Some cultivars require a little searching before you figure out where they belong.
Not this one.
Our first impression of Shady Cakes immediately brought to mind the aromas of spring flowers beginning to bloom. Tulips, daisies, and daffodils were the references that came to mind during the unboxing.
Its flavor followed with a similarly delicate character.
Smooth rather than overwhelming, Shady Cakes is a good example of why we created Realm in the first place. You don't need to know every branch of its genetic family tree to start understanding what's inside the jar.
Sometimes you can just follow your nose.
Welcome to the Floral Realm
Realm organizes our flower around five destinations based on flavor and aroma: Sweet, Fruit, Floral, Fuel, and Earth.
Shady Cakes has found its home in Floral.
This is where you'll discover cultivars with lighter, aromatic profiles that can bring to mind flowers, fresh herbs, and other delicate botanical characteristics.
And with Shady Cakes arriving alongside new Floral Realm genetics like Maye-Day, we're beginning to see just how many different directions our genetics team can take that idea.
Same Realm. Completely different flower.
Finding the Balance
Our first experience with Shady Cakes wasn't defined by one extreme or another.
Instead, the word that kept coming up was balanced.
For our reviewer, there was noticeable relaxation without feeling overly heavy or couch locked. There was also enough energy to remain engaged without the experience feeling overly stimulating.
Not too sleepy. Not too energetic.
Just a comfortable middle ground that made a strong first impression.
Of course, that's one person's experience rather than a promise of what Shady Cakes will feel like for everyone. Individual responses to cannabis can vary considerably based on tolerance, serving size, consumption method, and the individual.
That's why we think tasting notes are most useful as a starting point for exploration rather than a roadmap for exactly what you'll experience.
A Winter of Hunting Leads to a Spring of New Flower
While Shady Cakes might be giving us springtime vibes now, the story behind it started months earlier.
Our genetics team spent the winter working through the pheno hunt, growing and evaluating new crosses to identify the individual plants worth carrying forward.
That's a process that takes patience.
Two plants can share the same parents and still express themselves differently. Aroma, flower structure, growth characteristics, and other traits can vary from one phenotype to another.
The team's job is to find the ones that stand out.
Shady Cakes is one of the cultivars that made it through.
And now we get to enjoy the results.

Shady Cakes is another new in-house cross born from a winter of work by the Garden Remedies genetics team, and it has officially found its home in the Floral Realm.
