Behind the scenes, our Realm Genetics team is constantly working with new genetics, growing experimental crosses and searching for individual plants with the flavor, aroma, growth characteristics, and overall quality worthy of a place in the Realm lineup.
That search is known as a phenotype hunt—or pheno hunt—and Bounty Hunter gives you the opportunity to experience it while it’s happening.
What Is a Cannabis Phenotype?
Even when cannabis plants come from seeds of the same genetic cross, they aren’t necessarily identical.
Each seed contains its own combination of genes inherited from its parent plants. As those plants grow, they can express those genetics differently. These individual expressions are called phenotypes, or phenos for short.
One phenotype might develop a sweeter aroma, while another from the same cross could be fruitier, funkier, or more floral. Plants can also differ in structure, vigor, yield, cannabinoid content, terpene profile, and how they respond to their growing environment.
That’s why developing a new cultivar involves more than simply choosing two parent plants and crossing them. Once the seeds are created, we still have to find the individual expression we’re looking for.
That’s where the hunt begins.
How a Realm Genetics Pheno Hunt Works
Every few months, the Realm Genetics team brings new genetics into the grow to explore.
We typically begin by popping around 10–12 seeds from the same cross. Those plants are grown side by side under the same conditions, giving our cultivation team an opportunity to see the differences that emerge between them.
Throughout the process, we’re watching closely.
How does each plant grow in our rooms? How does it respond to its environment? What does the flower look like? What aromas and flavors begin to develop? What do the cannabinoid and terpene profiles tell us?
Most importantly: Which phenotype best represents what we’re looking for?
Finding that plant takes time. And we don’t necessarily know which one will win when the process begins.
That’s Where Bounty Hunter Comes In
Normally, consumers only see the end of the pheno-hunting process. A cultivation team selects a winning plant, that phenotype is reproduced, and eventually the finished cultivar makes its way onto the menu.
Bounty Hunter lets you experience an earlier part of that story.
Rather than waiting until we’ve selected the winning phenotype, we take flower from the different phenos being evaluated and use it to create a limited Bounty Hunter release, primarily available as pre-rolls.
The result is a unique snapshot of the genetic possibilities within a particular cross.
One plant might lean sweeter. Another could bring out more fruit. Another might reveal an unexpected layer of gas, earth, spice, or funk.
Because these are experimental phenotypes, a Bounty Hunter release isn’t necessarily a preview of one finished strain. It’s an opportunity to experience the range we’re exploring before the Realm Genetics team narrows the field.
From Bounty Hunter to the Realm
As the hunt continues, our cultivation team evaluates the individual phenotypes and determines which—if any—deserve to move forward.
A standout pheno could eventually be selected for continued cultivation and earn a permanent place within one of our flavor-based Realms. Others may remain part of the experiment and never appear in quite the same way again.
That’s part of what makes Bounty Hunter different.
These aren’t simply limited-edition pre-rolls. They’re part of the research and discovery happening inside our grow.
And when you try one, you’re getting an early taste of genetics that are still being explored.
On the Hunt: Mystical Melon
One of the latest crosses to enter the hunt is Mystical Melon, and our first impressions have given us plenty to explore.
So far, we’re finding subtle fruit, plenty of sweetness, and a little funk around the edges to keep things interesting.
Those characteristics have us looking toward the Sweet Realm, home to some of our sweeter, hazier, more uplifting cultivars.
But nothing is decided yet.
Different Mystical Melon phenotypes can bring different parts of the cross forward. One nug might deliver more sweetness. Another might emphasize the fruit. Another could reveal a little extra funk.
The Realm Genetics team will continue watching the individual plants, comparing their characteristics, and determining which expression stands above the rest.
Which Mystical Melon will ultimately claim the bounty?
